Local marketing

Stop spending just to get found

Local businesses often pay to rank on Google before anyone nearby knows they exist. Here is a simpler order of operations: reach neighbours first, then optimise search.

Getting found on Google is useful. Paying month after month just to appear in a crowded results page, before you have done anything to make local people aware of you, is a common trap.

Search captures demand that already exists. It does not create demand in streets where nobody has heard your name yet. For a plumber, salon, or takeaway with a small radius, that difference matters more than another keyword report.

The default playbook is backwards

Many owners are told: fix your website, buy SEO, run ads, then maybe try print. In practice:

  • SEO takes months and competes with every similar business in the county
  • Ads charge per click from people who may live outside your service area
  • Print and letterbox reach can land this week in postcodes you actually serve

None of that makes SEO useless. It makes order important. Awareness near the business often comes before ranking for "near me."

What to do first

Pick one neighbourhood or estate. One clear offer. One print run with a tracked QR from flyerfly. Deliver or hand out, then measure scans and calls for two weeks.

You are testing whether people who could choose you tomorrow respond when you show up in their letterbox. That is cheaper feedback than a three-month retainer and a ranking chart.

When SEO earns its place

Once people know your name, search becomes a convenience layer. They Google you after seeing a van, a leaflet, or a recommendation. Basic Google Business Profile hygiene and a decent site still matter.

The mistake is treating search as the only discovery channel while ignoring letterboxes, counters, and local partnerships that competitors underuse.

Measure customers, not clicks and impressions

Rankings and traffic feel productive. Paying customers in your postcode pay the rent. If your marketing budget only buys impressions from the wrong geography, cut it and reallocate to local reach you can count.

Tools that tie print to scans help you compare runs without guessing. flyerfly counts QR scans from leaflets and business cards so print sits beside search in the same spreadsheet.
